Riverview Tennis Club has clay court facilities and is open to all level of players

by Heather Ferguson

Tennis is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada and, in particular, in the Greater Moncton Area where the sport is enjoying unprecedented popularity among every age demographic. The Town of Riverview is home to one of only two clay court facilities in New Brunswick. The Riverview Tennis Club, located at the end of Biggs Drive next to the Byron Dobson Arena, is owned by the Town of Riverview and governed by a steering committee comprised of volunteers among their membership. Catering to the beginner as well as the seasoned player, Riverview Tennis Club consists of junior and senior leagues that offer a wide range of opportunity to hone skills and to enjoy friendly competition. A full summer season usually provides hours of fun in events and tournaments geared to every age group.

An excellent tennis facility, the Riverview Tennis Club’s six clay courts give its players the best surface in the province. Formed from Har-Tru clay, court surfaces provide a “comfortable and even playing surface with the texture and performance of world class stadium tennis” as their comprehensive website states. Offering certain advantages over hard asphalt surfaces, clay is easy on the body and provides a better surface for beginners in the sport. Advanced players also appreciate the quality of a clay court that fosters improved tactics and strategy in longer rally sequences.

The Riverview Tennis Club has seen a marked increase in interest from a membership in search of the healthful benefits of the game, and it is this aspect of the game that the Riverview Tennis Club subscribes to in its Top Ten Wellness Benefits From Tennis section on its website. A recent newsletter from the Minister of Health, the Honourable Michael B. Murphy, encouraged the population to make wellness issues a priority. In promoting tennis as a source of fresh air, weight loss, exercise, and improved cardio-vascular health, people can use tennis as a path to improved health and well-being. Psychological wellness in the form of optimism, improved self-esteem, companionship, and just plain fun are also obvious benefits to participants of every age group and gender. The perfect sport for families, friends, and groups of all types, tennis is truly the “sport of a lifetime.”
