Moncton Wesleyan - Atlantic Canada's largest church - is dynamic and growing

by Heather Ferguson

Moncton Wesleyan is Atlantic Canada’s largest church, with a congregation of over 3500 people averaging more than 1,700 persons in attendance each weekend. With a presence of over 100 years in the City of Moncton, this church is home to many fine ministries, which come under their umbrella, including the Moncton Christian Academy, which offers a complete secondary school education from kindergarten to grade 12; a wonderful children’s ministry with over 150 volunteers; a youth ministry attracting more than 300 teens on Tuesday evenings, a community out-reach program; a family care ministry; and a production component, which produces such community-based events as the famous “Living Christmas Tree,” which is an annual “sold out” popular performance. With 10 full-time and 2 part-time pastors employed by Moncton Wesleyan, there is a pastor assigned to each individual ministry.

Dr. L. D. Buckingham is the senior pastor at the Moncton Wesleyan Church, a role he has filled for the last 36 years. With a mission to present timeless Christian values with new and innovative methods, he says, “The church ought to be the most relevant, cutting-edge, and happening organization in any city...,” a view reiterated by Kevin J. Matthews, executive pastor, who says, “We have a truly unique church. What makes it special is that our underlying message remains constant, but the ways we choose to convey it are more timely.” He continues, “Our motto is ‘You Belong,’ and our approach is total acceptance toward all faiths.” Indeed, in these times when most churches have seen a marked depletion in their congregations, Moncton Wesleyan has grown steadily over the years by striving to remain relevant in their timely approach to life in the modern world, and by their partnerships with the community at large. This exceptional church has been a driving force in the lives of its parishioners and a dynamic component in the quest for spiritual wellness in the community. Congratulations to Moncton Wesleyan in their new expansion and continued success in the years to come!

Moncton Wesleyan is very proud of their new expansion, which include 20,000 sq. ft. of additional space to their facility. There is a 4,500 sq. ft. Atrium, which houses a spacious meeting area and the all-new Mocha Wesleyan, a coffee stop.  The 16,000 sq. ft. Life Centre with three additional floors of educational space has also been added. A new family Resource Centre, which is a library that looks more like a bookstore, will provide valuable resources for families. Other features include new pre-school areas, newly renovated nurseries, new rest rooms, lobby areas, and additional classrooms for the Christian Academy. With plans in the works for a new 2,000-seat auditorium to begin construction later this year, Moncton Wesleyan is well poised to move into the future with the full confidence of the dynamic organization it is.
